Before You Buy Medicine Online: A Safety-First Checklist

A polished website and a low price do not prove that an online pharmacy is legitimate. Verify the pharmacy before sharing a prescription or payment details.

Verify before comparing

The FDA’s BeSafeRx resources explain warning signs and how to check online pharmacies. Look for a valid prescription requirement, appropriate licensing, a U.S. address and contact information for U.S. pharmacy services, and access to a licensed pharmacist. Verify licensing through the relevant state board rather than trusting a badge image.

Be cautious with dramatic promises

Promises of prescription medicine without a prescription, unclear company details, or pressure to purchase immediately should stop the transaction. A website can copy logos, reviews, or professional-looking photos. Those design details do not authenticate its supply chain.

International purchases need extra care

Do not assume that a product sold abroad has FDA approval or that personal importation is automatically permitted. The FDA generally cannot guarantee medicines outside the legitimate U.S. supply chain. Ask your pharmacist and consult official guidance before considering an overseas purchase.

Use a short verification record

  1. Write down the pharmacy’s legal name and address.
  2. Check the license with the appropriate regulator.
  3. Confirm how to speak with a pharmacist.
  4. Read the shipping, privacy, return, and prescription policies.
  5. Confirm the exact medicine and total cost only after verification.

If a shipment looks unfamiliar or differs from what was prescribed, do not guess about what it contains. Contact your pharmacist or prescriber for guidance. Keep the packaging and order information so you can describe the concern accurately.
