The biggest package or deepest discount is not always the best purchase. Start with the product you actually need and the active ingredients on the label.

Read before reaching for a coupon

Over-the-counter medicines can still cause side effects and interact with other products. Read the Drug Facts label, including active ingredients, warnings, and directions. Ask a pharmacist about use with your prescriptions, health conditions, pregnancy, or children.

Compare like with like

Check the active ingredient, strength, dosage form, and quantity. Products for similar symptoms can contain different medicines, and combination products may duplicate something you already take. A familiar front-of-package phrase is not enough to establish equivalence.

Calculate cost per usable amount

For products you already know are appropriate, divide the total price by the number of comparable units. Include delivery fees and any required membership cost. Our unit-price tool can help with this arithmetic; it cannot decide whether two medicines are clinically interchangeable.

Think about expiry dates and realistic use. Buying a large quantity you will discard is not a saving. Store medicines as directed and away from children and pets.

Use retailer offers deliberately

Browse current offers at established retailers and read the item restrictions. Some coupons require an account, a particular package size, or a minimum purchase. Do not add unnecessary items simply to meet a spending threshold.

A small essentials inventory

Make a list of products you actually use, what remains, and when it expires. Before buying a duplicate, check your shelf. Keep medicines in their original packaging so directions and warnings stay available.

One rule worth keeping: decide on the appropriate product first, then look for the best price. Letting a discount choose your treatment reverses the order.
